DONNA ROSEALLEN "LYNDY" WHEELER MYERS ~ Class of 1962
November 21, 1943 - June 26, 2024

Lyndy Wheeler

Donna Roseallen "Lyndy" Wheeler Myers was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, November 21, 1943, and passed away at home with husband and hospice on June 26, 2024.

Lyndy was the daughter of Bob and Nikki Wheeler of Richland, where she grew up. Her younger sister, Paige Wheeler, was the co-valedictorian of Col-Hi '65. Toby Wheeler, her other sister, was in '65 but spent a year in Norway as a foreign exchange student. Toby was short of some mandatory credit, so Mr. Haag would not let her graduate with '65. She worked at the Richland library, completed the mandatory class and graduated with '66. Lyndy's little brother, Robert Wheeler, graduated in 1971.

Lyndy and Wayne's first date was Tolo junior year. She asked him on a dare from her girlfriends. Although they shared American History and Chemistry classes, Wayne Myers ('62) -- a social recluse and nerd -- was not sure who she was when she called to ask him. They dated most of their senior year.

During their senior year, Lyndy's family hosted Col-Hi's AFS foreign exchange student, Vivian Gericke.

Lyndy tried college for two years then worked while Wayne attended the Air Force Academy. Lyndy was his "home-town sweetheart" until they married in 1967.

During their 23-year Air Force career, the family moved 17 times. Lyndy, the Professional, did it all: wife, mother, homemaker, hostess, and family advocate -- meeting new challenges at each new base. From her teens to retirement, she enjoyed working retail sales: clerk, department manager, bridal consultant, and thrift store manager. At Air Force bases she taught Chinese cooking, assisted in classrooms, led Brownie troops, and managed thrift (consignment) stores.

In the 1970's Lyndy and Wayne added three children to their family. Amy is now an entrepreneurial photographer and house-and-pet sitter in St. Augustine, FL. Middle-child, Dana, is on the faculty at the University of Florida, living in Gainesville with her husband, Scott Ashcraft. Michael is the IT specialist at the Pine Ridge Academy Middle School where Stefanie, his wife, is the librarian. Elizabeth, Ana, and Kira (Mike and Stef's three daughters) are our only grandchildren and were the lights of Lyndy's life.

Lyndy stayed busy through 57 years of marriage -- homemaking and working while raising three children, then day-caring for her granddaughters. When she and Wayne retired and relocated to St. Augustine in 2014, they traveled and cruised together. Despite Lyndy's failing health, they enjoyed China, Europe, and Africa before settling at home in Palencia.
