Carey Melcher

Carey Thomas Melcher, a long time resident of The Dalles, OR passed away on September 4, 2015, at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital.

He was born on March 17, 1944, in Vanport, OR to Virgil and Clara (Ernest) Melcher. He mainly grew up in the Pacific Northwest. Carey attended Quincy High School, graduated with the Class of 1962 from Richland's Columbia High School and attended Lower Columbia Basin College.

Carey enlisted in the United States Army for twenty-one years as a CI agent. While in the Army, he served in the Vietnam War and achieved the rank of Sergeant Major before his honorable discharge in 1986.

He married Ann Milner on October 23, 1971, in Wasco, OR. After agents training, they enjoyed assignments in Okinawa, Japan; Belgium, Korea and Washington D.C.

In 1988, he returned to the Pacific Northwest. He had many varied interests throughout his life including teaching English as a second language, volunteering at the Oregon Veteran's Home, serving on several committees for St. Peter's Catholic Church and as a Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus.

Carey is survived by his wife, Ann of The Dalles; daughter, Sonya Tinnirello (Guy) of Conroe, TX; daughter, Annette Melcher of Brooklyn, NY; and granddaughter, Sarah Melcher of Conroe, TX.

Services were held on September 15, 2015, at St. Peter's Church celebrated by Father Joseph Levine. The Rosary was said at 10:30 a.m., and the Funeral Mass began at 11:00 a.m. A Reception followed.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Veteran's Foundation, Oregon Health & Science University Foundation or a charity of your choosing.
